VERGENNES. City in Addison County. City incorporated out of parts of New
Haven, Panton and Ferrisburg, October 23, 1788. Part of New Haven annexed November
1, 1791. Act of October 31, 1796, repealed act of November 1, 1791, annexing part of
Waltham to Vergennes and incorporates such part into the town of Waltham.
VERNON. Town in Windham County. The town of Hinsdale, N. H., embraced
lands on both sides of the Connecticut River. The name of Hinsdale, Vermont, was
changed to Vernon October 21, 1802. See Hinsdale, and Guilford (for New York grant).
VERSHIRE. Town in Orange County. Vermont grant to
Abner Seelye and sixty-four associates August 3, 1781. Line with West Fairlee and Strafford established, 1802.
Line with Corinth established, 1804 and 1806. Part annexed to Corinth, 1811. Change of
name to Ely authorized, 1878. Name changed back to Vershire, 1882. See Gageborough (New York grant).
VICTORY. Town in Essex County. Vermont grant of 23,040 acres to
Capt. Ebenezer Fisk and sixty-four associates September 6, 1781. Part of Bradleyvale annexed,
1856.
VINEYARD. Name changed from Isle La Motte, 1802. Name changed back to Isle
La Motte, 1830. See Isle La Motte.
VIRGIN HALL. New York grant of 26,000 acres by Lt. Gov. Colden August 9,
1770, covering Aikin's Gore and part of Andover, including part, at least, of what is now
Weston.
