ST. ALBANS. Town in Franklin County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Stephen Pomroy and sixty-three associates August 17, 1763. Line established with Fairfield and Swanton, 1816. Johnson's Island annexed, 1842. Wood's Island annexed, 1845. See Townshend (New York grant). 

ST. ANDREW'S GORE. 10,000 acres granted by Vermont to James Whitelaw, James Savage and William Coit October 26, 1788. Earliest appearance as St. Andrew's Gore in the state records is in a petition of the inhabitants dated October 31, 1797, asking that the gore be incorporated into a town by the name of Plainfield. In the charter of Goshen, and also in the act in accordance with which the said charter was issued (1845), there is a reference to a monument in the boundary of Goshen Gore "marked St. Andrews Gore, Aug. 12, 1788," or "marked St. Andrews corner, 1788." Incorporated into a town by the name of Plainfield, November 6, 1797.

ST. GEORGE. Town in Chittenden County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres  to Jesse Hallock and sixty-three associates August 18, 1763. Annexation of part of Shelburne authorized, 1848.

ST. GEORGE. New York grant of 30,000 acres by Lt. Gov. Colden to John Woods & Co., November 10, 1774; included lands in Coventry and vicinity. Marked "John Wood or St. George Township" on map preceding index to Vol. I, Documentary History of New York. Not the present town of St. George in Chittenden County. 

ST. JOHNSBURY. Town in Caledonia County Vermont grant to Jonathan Arnold and twenty-two associates November 1, 1786. See Bessborough (New York grant).

SALEM. Vermont grant of 23,040 acres to Col. Jacob Davis and sixty-four associates  August 18, 1781. Part annexed to Newport, 1816. Authorized to be annexed to Derby, 1880. See Gatesborough.

SALISBURY. Town in Addison County. New Hampshire grant of 25,040 acres to John Evarts and sixty-one associates November 3, 1761. New York grant by Gov. Dunmore indirectly to himself, July 8, 1771, covered lands in Salisbury chartered by New Hampshire in 1761. Line established with Leicester, October 23, 1789. Part united with part of Leicester for school purposes, 1803. Alteration of boundary with Leicester and annexation of part to Leicester and part of Leicester to Salisbury authorized, 1840. Part annexed to Ripton, 1832.

SANDGATE. Town in Bennington County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to John Park and six-five associates, August 11, 1761.

SEARSBURG. Town in Bennington County. New York grant 29,000 acres to John Reade April 24, 1770, called Readsborough and covered the present towns of Readsborough and Searsburg. Vermont grant of 10,240 acres to Col. William Williams and twenty-five associates, February 23, 1781. Line with Wilmington established, 1850. See Readsboro.

SHAFTSBURY. Town in Bennington County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to John Brown and sixty-one associates August 20, 1761. New York grant 1,800 acres by Gov. Dunmore to Ebenezer Cole March 13, 1771, covered lands on Shaftsbury chartered by New Hampshire.  See under Arlington, New York grant Napier.

SHARON. Town in Windsor County. New Hampshire grant of 22,000 acres to John Taylor and sixty-one associates August 17, 1761. On petition for confirmation of New Hampshire charter by New York. Part f Pomfret annexed, 1807.

SHEFFIELD. Town in Caledonia County. Vermont grant of 23,040 acres to Stephen Kingsbury and seventy-three associates October 25, 1793. Part annexed to Barton, 1858.

SHELBURNE. Town in Chittenden County. New Hampshire grant of 23,500 acres to Jesse Hallock and sixty-two associates August 18, 1763. Part authorized to be annexed to St. George, 1848.

SHELDON. Town in Franklin County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres as Hungerford to Samuel Hungerford an sixty-three associates August 18, 1763. Name changed to Sheldon November 8, 1692. Line with Highgate, Huntsburg and Swanton established, 1810. Part of Fairfield authorized to be annexed, 1851. See New Rutland (New York grant).

SHERBURNE. Town in Rutland County. New Hampshire grant as Killington of 24,640 acres to Samuel Yeates and sixty-five associates July 7, 1761. Name changed to Sherburne November 4, 1800. Part of Parkerstown (formerly Parker's Gore) annexed, 1822.  Part annexed to Pittsfield, 1822. Reannexed to Sherburne, 1827. Part of Chittenden authorized to be annexed, 1829. All that part of what was formerly Parker's Gore commonly called "No Town" not claimed by Sherburne annexed to Stockbridge, 1884. See Newry (New York grant).

SHOREHAM. Town in Addison County. New Hampshire grant of 25,000 acres to John Chandler and sixty-one associates October 8, 1761. New York grant of 4,000 acres to Wm. Nichols by Gov. Tryon March 3, 1772, covered lands chartered by New Hampshire in Shoreham.

SHREWSBURY. Town in Rutland County. New Hampshire grant of 24,000 acres to Samuel Ashley and sixty-three associates September 4, 1761. New York grant called Hulton of 12,000 acres by Lt. Gov. Colden to James Abell & Co. August 1, 1770, covered lands in Shrewsbury granted by New Hampshire. 

SIDNEY. New York grant of 23,000 acres by Lt. Gov. Colden to John Felthausen & Co. September 27, 1774, in Cabot and vicinity. Marked "John Felthausen & Co." on map preceding index to Vol. I, Documentary History of New York.

SMITHFIELD. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Samuel Hungerford and sixty-three associates August 18, 1763. New York grant of 25,000 acres by Lt. Gov. Colden to Samuel Ashley & Co., covered lands granted by New Hampshire in Smithfield. Annexed to Bakersfield and Fairfield, 1792.

SOCIALBOROUGH or SOCIALBURGH. New York grant of 48,000 acres by Gov. Dunmore April 3, 1771; included Rutland and Pittsford chartered by New Hampshire.  Called "Socialburgh" in Vermont Historical Society Collections, Vol. I, and H. Hall's early History of Vermont. Marked "Socialborough" on map preceding index to Vol. I, Documentary History of New York. See also town of Clarendon, in each volume of Governor and Council, where it is said Clarendon was called Socialborough.

SOMERSET. Town in Windham County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Thomas Denny and sixty-one associates September 9, 1761. Part authorized to be annexed to Dover and part to Wardsboro, 1851. Parts provisionally annexed to Wilmington and Stratton, 1858. See Leinster (New York grant).

SOUTH BURLINGTON. Town in Chittenden County. Incorporation authorized by the charter of the city of Burlington, being the remainder of the town of Burlington, 1852. See Burlington.

SOUTH HERO. Town in Grand Isle County. Vermont grant as part of Two Heroes to Ethan Allen, Samuel Herrick, and three hundred and sixty-three associates October 27, 1779. Two Heroes divided into North and South Hero October 21, 1788. Divided into two towns, South and Middle Hero, with joint representation in legislature, 1798. Middle Hero first represented as such in 1810. Certain islands annexed, 1800. Part of Grand Isle (Savage Island) authorized to be annexed, 1832; repealed, 1834. SPRINGFIELD. Town in Windsor County. New Hampshire grant of 25,000 acres to Gideon Lyman and sixty-one associates August 20, 1761. New Hampshire charter confirmed by New York May 25, 1772.

STAMFORD. Town in Bennington County. New York grant of 23,040 acres to Elisha Cook and sixty associates March 6, 1753. Charter renewed September 21, 1761.  Regranted as New Stamford, to Francis Bernard and sixty-five associates June 9, 1764.  Provision for establishing line with Pownal, 1849.

STANNARD. Town in Caledonia County. Name changed from Goshen Gore, 1867.  Town incorporated, 1869.

STARKSBORO. Town in Addison County. Vermont grant to David Bridia, Gen. John Stark, and sixty-six associates November 9, 1780. Formerly in Chittenden County, but annexed to Addison County October 29, 1794. Part of Monkton annexed, March 4, 1797. See Whippleborough (New York grant). 

STERLING. Vermont grant by act passed February 25, 1782. Charter issued for 23,040 acres to Samuel Safford and sixty-two associates October 18, 1805. Part annexed to Cambridge, 1828. Annexation to Johnson, Morristown and Stowe authorized, 1855.

STOCKBRIDGE. Town in Windsor County. New Hampshire grant of 28,100 acres to William Dodge and sixty-five associates July 21, 1761. Union of part of Stockbridge and part of Pittsford for school purposes, 1804. That part of Parker's Gore not claimed by Sherburne annexed, 1884. Line established with Pittsfield, 1851. STOWE. Town in Lamoille County. New Hampshire grant as Stow of 23,040 aces to Joshua Simmons and sixty-three associates June 8, 1763. Annexation of Mansfield authorized, 1848. Act of 1848 repealed in part, 1853. Annexation of part of Sterling authorized, 1855. Provision for establishing line with Underhill, 1861.

STRAFFORD. Town in Orange County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Solomon Phelps and sixty-three associates August 12, 1761. Blake's Gore granted by Vermont to Timothy Blake and fourteen associates June 18, 1785, by charter was made a part of Strafford. Line with West Fairlee and Vershire established, 1802.

STRATTON. Town in Windham County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Isaac Searl and sixty-two associates July 20, 1761. New York grant of 24,000 acres to Edmund Fanning by Lt. Gov. Colden June 22, 1775, covered Stratton. Stratton Gore annexed October 28, 1799. Boundaries established, 1803. Part of Somerset provisionally annexed, 1858.

STRATTON GORE. Annexed to Stratton October 28, 1799. First appearance as Stanton Gore in State Papers in a petition of the inhabitants dated October 2, 1799, asking to be annexed to Stratton.

SUDBURY. Town in Rutland County. New Hampshire grant of 14,424 acres to Capt. Silas Brown and forty-seven associates August 6, 1763. Same territory granted as Dunbar by New Hampshire to Isaac Searle and sixty-six associates June 15, 1764. Part of Hubbardton annexed, 1806.

SUNDERLAND. Town in Bennington County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Isaac Searl and sixty-one associates July 29, 1761. See under Princeton for New York grant, and under Arlington, the New York grant to J. Napier. Boundaries of town of Stratton established, 1803.

SUTTON. Town in Caledonia County. Change of name from Billymead, 1812. See Bamf (New York grant).

SWANTON. Town in Franklin County. New Hampshire grant of 23,040 acres to Joshua Goodrich and sixty-three associates August 17, 1763. Line with Highgate and Sheldon established, 1810. Line with St. Albans and Fairfield established, 1816. Line with Fairfield established and part of Fairfield annexed, and part of Swanton annexed to Fairfield, 1829. Part of Highgate annexed, 1836.  See Prattsburg (New York grant).
